ARCHIVE --
051609  We wondered why it took Owen 45 minutes to go down for his afternoon nap today...  he was having way too much fun pulling clothes in from the sides of his crib.

Kevin took 3rd in his age group at the Hilton Head tri this year, really good considering how much more competitive it was than in previous years.  Of course, we missed it because Owen was at the condo with a 103 degree fever.  Very scary, but apparently he just had a 48 hour virus.  We can't wait to take him back when he's 100% to see how he likes the beach.

041509  Uncle Corey came to visit last Friday.  I have no pics because I was scared a tornado was about to hit but nonetheless...  Corey deduced that Owen needed a sleeveless muscle tee to show off his shapely shoulders and arms.  Last night, Judy and I found the perfect little shirt.  Here it is!

040309  I have a lot of pics I keep meaning to upload, but I am so far behind!
The first night that Owen could officially sit up at his magic music table by himself.  So proud of himself - he didn't need Momma's help anymore!

We took some pictures at Playgym a few weeks ago.  It is so much fun to watch how much he grows each week in the class.  You can tell he really enjoys the class and all of the music and activities.  Kevin and I will never forget the Wiggy Wiggles song.  I think we will be singing that to grandkids when we're 80!

Owen tried fruit for the first time a few weeks ago.  I am way behind on posting photos of it.  As with the veggies, he was not a big fan for his first few opportunities to try fruit.  His first try was pears, followed by apple sauce.  They both tasted yummy and we thought he would love it, but as you can tell by the pics below, he was not amused.  Finally we found a winner in peaches, and he has gradually warmed up to the rest.  Sidenote: Loves, loves, loves prunes!  What a good boy!

Ewwwww!!!

032309  A few updates from last week - Owen's check up went well - He was 19.7 pounds, 28 inches long.
Owen's first time at the skating rink.  Namaw took a day off to play with the cousins so we went along for the ride.  Owen enjoyed watching the flashing lights and the skaters at the rink.  A few pics from that day.

Owen has also started taking baths in the big tub.  He is turning into such a water baby.  He would put his face under the faucet if you would let him.

032009  Owen had another playdate with Emma on Friday.
First off, we had to wake Owen up at 10 so he would be ready to go!  This is his just waking up face - pretty funny.

Here he and Emma are - all buckled in and ready to go.  They could sort of see each other over the car seats.  This was a big occasion because it was Owen's first time riding in any car other than Veego!

And here are the youngsters on their walk. It was a beautiful day, and we went to the park in Collegedale which I totally didn't know existed even though I lived like 2 miles away for 15 years!  Owen feels like such a big boy riding forward in his stroller.

Jimmy Fallon is my new hero!!! Click here if you haven't seen the clips yet!
Go Mocs!
Ok so just for comparison, the Justin Timberlake segment only has 14,000 hits.  The Mocs segments have gotten at least 7,000, far exceeding all of the other clips except Justin.  I am pretty impressed.  Of course, judging from the comments, its all the residents of Chattanooga checking out the Mocs references.

More details to follow - Come join us in walking on  May 3rd to help prevent premature birth and birth defects!

031709  In honor of Grandpa PJ -- The birthday of one of Owen's namesakes, Patrick Joseph McKenna, was this past Monday and in honor of him as well as the grand Irish holiday today, we bought Owen a "Grandpa hat".  The McKenna resemblance is amazing especially with the hat on!!

031609  Signs of the times - When I changed Owen out of his sleep sack this morning, I noticed his little 'skinned knees' where he keeps trying to raise up on his legs to start crawling.  Yikes!  It won't be long now.

Also here's a nicer pic of the two teeth from this weekend.  For clarification, I did not make Owen cry in the original picture.  It was his general fussy nighttime period and I decided to go ahead and take the pic since he was crying anyway.

031009  Two teeth and counting

Sunday night we went to GG's 88th birthday party.  Owen sat in her lap for a few minutes which was a big thrill for Memaw.  We were impressed with how well he acted, sitting with lots of different people without fussing even though the birthday party fell right during nap time!

Monday night we went to Owen's first basketball game and watched the UTC Mocs win the SoCon championship.  Owen was mesmerized by all of the action - band, cheerleaders, players.  However, he was a little upset every time the crowd cheered loudly, and this was a very exciting game so that happened quite a bit!

030209  My how bendy you've become!  I can't believe Owen can put his feet in his mouth!

Owen's first tooth - This is a pic from the day we noticed it.  It's barely breaking the skin.  You can really see it now, but I still haven't gotten a good pic of it recently.

Happy Valentine's Day to Everyone!!

021509  Five Months Already??  Owen is now weighing in at 19.2 pounds and just a little over 26" tall.  He is pretty much able to sit on his own and his first tooth popped up over the weekend!  He also found his toes in the last week.  So cute!!  He is so proud of his newfound flexibility.  I was afraid he would never touch his toes as he's just not as flexible as Emma Bear who can already do the splits it seems!  He started eating cereal this month and just tried some yummy squash.  I can't believe its been almost half a year with little Stinky.  Can hardly imagine how life was without him... this past Saturday Owen slept in late and I got to sit in bed and watch cartoons for a few minutes.  (Kevin and I used to always sit in bed and watch Spongebob on the weekends)  I was like, 'man I haven't done this since exactly Sept 14th!!

Last week we went to the Creative Discovery Museum and the TN Aquarium and Owen had a blast.  He loved watching the kids play at CDM and watching the fishes play at the Aqua.  Also we got to the Aquarium at a perfect time - the scuba divers were feeding the fish, and the penguins and otters were in rare form, jumping and frolicking.  Here are a few pics of the cuteness!!

020509  A sweet little story - Last Saturday, we journeyed to the Verve' performance (a variety of dance performances by Baylor's Verve dancers - ballet, jazz, modern etc).  Hannah and Kendra had both choreographed for it.  So I figured Owen would either be asleep the whole time or out in the hallway with Daddy.  Of course I'd be tickled if he would watch the dances, but the thought never really crossed my mind.  So we enter the theatre with Owen sleeping.  Eyes pop open about 5 minutes til.  Kevin took him out and calmed him down and was able to come back inside before the first performance.  Yada yada, Owen loved Verve'!  He patiently sat in his carrier, glued to the dancers.  We joked that he was thinking - 'yay, Mommy is finally letting me watch tv' with all the flashing lights and colorful figures moving around.  Not only did he love the performances, he was 'singing' along to the music each time.  Thankfully the music was so loud that we didn't have to take him outside - his sweet humming was drowned out, but it was so cute.  The only times he got restless were during the ballet performance (slow music) and the intermission musical performance (no flashing lights or dancers).  Kevin and I were very proud, and I wanted to get up and take a picture so badly, but no flash photography is allowed and I figured it wouldn't turn out anyway with the weird lighting going on.
Afterward, he was a little fussy but we still hung out and talked to Aunt Hannah and Aunt Kendra for a little while...

020409  Ok I have several fun stories I want to share, but I'm going to have to limit it for now and catch up later.

How spoiled is this child??  If it won't snow in Chattanooga, ship it in...  We woke up Tuesday morning to coolers of snow on the porch, courtesy of Nana and Papaw.  They had a couple of inches at their house on Signal, and since we couldn't make it up there, they brought some to us!  After trying all day to play in the snow, Owen was finally in a good enough mood last night so I quickly set up video and digital with remote control to try to capture all the cuteness.  Poor child.  I sat him in it and it stuck to his polar bear suit.  I touched it to his mouth and he made a face like 'yikes this is cold!'  For once I was glad that our downstairs stays only a few degrees above the outdoor temp because the snowman I built lasted the whole time we played.  We even dumped some snow outside for him to lay in in his snowsuit.  I do think he had fun - Nana and Papaw can back me up on that one.

012609  This is Saturday's update, a few days late.  Owen is beginning to try cereal.  Even a few days later, he is still working on getting the hang of it.  <We are surprised at this, since eating has been his strong point thus far in life.>  It is so much fun to watch a baby learning something new like this.

Mmm, finger-licking good!

012209  Ok how precious is this?  All of a sudden, Owen has really taken to one of his snuggles (I think Aunt Maura gave him this one).  Anyway one day I offered it to him, and he just loved on it and chewed on it for awhile, so I've been calling it 'Chewy' and taking it with us everywhere.
I didn't pose either of these pics.  The first one is from the first time he played with Chewy; he fell asleep snuggling it.  The second picture is from tonight; Owen rolled over while still clutching Chewy, so it looks like Chewy was piggy-backing with him.

012009  This past weekend, we got to finally meet Baby Kate, who is about 7 weeks younger than Owen, and Baby Miles, who will be joining us any minute now (due in February).  Kate is such a cutie!  It was however very strange to see Kevin and Dan (who were roommates when Kevin and I first started dating), each with babies in tow.  Wow how things have changed.  Here is a pic I found from almost 6 years ago and then Dan and Kev with Kate and Owen.

Also yesterday we were startled to look outside and see snow falling.  So we quickly raced outside to break in Owen's new snowsuit.  It is just a little big which is a good thing considering how quickly he is growing.  We let the snowflakes fall on his face, and tried to get pics where you could see the snowflakes, but they did not show up very well since it was so bright outside.  At least we can say Owen did see snow during his first winter.

011509  Four Months - A Third of the Year Down!

We celebrated Owen's four-month b-day today with shots (both picture form and needle form).  Officially Owen tipped the scales at 17.25 pounds, 26 inches tall - still right at 90th percentile (although I have weighed him at a full 18 pounds in the last several days).  Our pediatrician, who we love, got choked up at what a mini-me Owen is!  Owen smiled while Kevin was holding him at one point, and Dr. May was like 'wow, I have to have a picture of you two for my wall!  You look just alike!'

Month 4 was a big one - Owen is now rolling a full 360 degrees -- to the left.  He is not an ambi-turner yet (for those closet-Zoolander fans - we are still trying to find some other than Kevin and me!).  I use pillows and boppy to block his progress if I leave him alone.  He doesn't despise being on his stomach anymore, except at night.  Monday night was the first night he spent on his tummy, and none of us got a good night's sleep.  We are hoping he will soon be able to fight his new found ability at night when he needs to sleep. He has been sleeping through the night since early November, getting in 5 feedings a day with Kevin giving him a bottle before he goes into work at 2.  I feel like I will forever think in 4-hour increments, 7/11/3/7/11, or thereabouts.  He loves to stand up on your legs when you hold and will not often let you hold him like a baby anymore.  Owen is also grasping toys, even with both hands, and trying to get everything in his mouth.  It's so cute because instead of bringing things to his mouth, he tries to bring his mouth to the objects.

I'm sure there have been lots more cute stories I could think of from this month, but in the effort to actually post his birthday message this month, I think I will stop here!

010509  So I am going to attempt to share a little of our Christmas cheer.  I took so many pictures that I have been overwhelmed by them.  Owen is just so sweet right now.  He is very flirtatious and loves to talk to anyone who will carry on a conversation with him.  My favorite is when the little eyebrows get to working like he is so serious in his pondering...
UTC Gang Christmas Party - All the sweet babies and crazy adults minus Whitakers (Dusty is there just behind Emma Bear).  I think this was our first official Christmas party although we talk about it each year!  It was great to see everyone, but again we were amazed how the conversations have changed.  I'm so glad everyone's doing so well and that we've managed to stay tight for 5 years+.

Christmas Eve was a wild day, including breakfast with Grandma and Grandpa, children's mass at St P & P, and evening festivities at Aunt Kelly's house.  Owen fell asleep right after breakfast, humming himself to sleep.  It was adorable!  Then he slept through mass like an angel -  storing up all his energy to entertain the troops at Kelly's.  We actually had to wake him up at 8:30 to keep him on some sort of feeding schedule.  Owen came out as "Santa" to all of the family opening gifts.  He was a big hit.  (Thanks to Aunt Kelly for finding the Santa suit.)  After much of the crowd left and everything had died down, we put Owen on the floor to play.  The cousins love to sit and wait for the next bodily function to occur!  Owen eventually started trying to roll over and actually rolled back and forth several times.  I wish I had video of it because by the end we were all enthralled and cheering him on.  Every time he hit his back or tummy we would clap and yell!!  We did not return home until well past midnight - Owen's latest night out to date.
Some random pictures from throughout the day...

Owen opening presents...

Christmas Day started off on a not-so-happy note.  Kevin was called into work at 3am :( but still managed to make it back in time to open presents when Owen woke up.  Afterward we headed to Grandma and Grandpa's and then up to Papaw and Nana's.  Owen again arrived as Santa and was the life of the party.

Owen really liked Uncle Corey although Corey still has yet to hold him...

Owen with Papaw's trainset again...

That night we settled in and read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" - hopefully a family tradition that will occur on the correct night from now on!

A few days later we went to Hannah's annual Christmas party.  I wasn't feeling well but it would be another 24 hours before I realized I was again sick for the second time in a month!  Yes similar to Ada's plight, what had been a cold of some sort turned into an ear infection resulting in a trip to the emergency room for meds in the early am.  It is strange because I was so healthy through my pregnancy, I am not used to being sick!!
Me and Owen with Hannah and Baby Maounis

And to wrap up the holidays, a snapshot of New Years Eve.  Kevin had to work NYE so we had a lowkey get together with the "ladies" as I call them - Ada and Emma.  Nolan opted out.  We had some good food and fellowship but left early, getting home in time to watch the ball drop with Daddy.

After all the fun times, Kevin caught Owen and me napping after breakfast on New Years Day...

121508  I'm being replaced!  So this morning I startled awake at 8:30 - well past Owen's typical 7 - 7:30 wake/breakfast time.  Owen was grunting a little, but I did not think he was awake yet so I calmly got ready (brushing teeth, etc) and made my way in to greet my little man.  Shock!  I look into the crib to find this - my contented little precious, fully awake and so happy with his thumb!!

Owen became a full-on thumb sucker last week, although we have been expecting he might adopt this oral fixation since we watched him suck his thumb in utero via ultrasound.  He gets quite cranky when someone (insert Mommy or Daddy) tries to discourage his new feat, and his poor little nose is bearing the battle scars each morning from where he is obviously jabbing his thumb into his face trying to find his mouth at night while mean Mommy and Daddy sleep.  We will keep you posted on the continuing battle; although I already have a feeling Owen will win the war.  Don't tell Owen, but it is so adorable when he does do it!  Below was one of the first major offenses last week.

First Road Trip sort of...  I feel like you must be gone at least 12 hours to call a trip a road trip, but nonetheless our first big adventure occurred last Thursday, and once again Mommy had a life lesson along the way.  Lesson learned - If you have a baby and think you are sick, cancel road trip.  Do not pass go, do not collect $200.  First of all it had been so long since I'd been sick, I forgot how miserable it is; and secondly, I learned you certainly cannot shrug off sickness or take things more easily when baby is in tow!  Like pull over and take a nap?  Don't think so.  So I will save a lot of details, but we planned to go to Nashville and see a few sites while also visiting our friends Jess and Antonio, Taryn, and Becca and Brent.  (Taryn had not met little O yet.)  We did go to Opryland for a little while and we did technically eat dinner with Taryn, Antonio, and Jess.  I feel so badly that I basically just came in and germed up Jessica's house for a few hours.  She even made me soup!!
Becca ended up not meeting us because she was stuck in several inches of snow!  As the realization hit me that I did in fact have a fever, sore throat, headache, stuffy nose, nausea and possible hallucinations due to said fever, Kevin and I decided it would be best to get back home that night in case Owen started to get my crud and we had to get to the ped quickly.
It was quite a night, but thankfully no one in my presence has yet come down with the same ickiness, although we keep taking Owen's temp every few hours!  As a side note: he is so thankful to Aunt Kelly for giving us a forehead thermometer!  Here is a pic from Opryland and a pic with Aunt Taryn.  To all involved - I am so sorry I exposed you to that.  I truly think I just had mommy-goggles on and didn't realize how sick I was getting!!

120808  Let's back up for a minute.  I am realizing I did not mention any of our Thanksgiving festivities.  Our Thanksgiving lasts a week, including Namaw's on Sunday, Grandma's on Thursday, and this year we even got to visit with Papaw, Nana, and Uncle Corey on Saturday (Nana and Papaw are usually out of town).  Here are a few pics from the week.
Owen literally fell asleep on the floor playing with everyone at Aunt Kelly's house.  The second picture shows all of our stockings at Grandma's house which were already hung up.  Grandma makes each stocking - cross-stitching the designs on the front.

The next pics are from the Grand Illumination.   It was a lot of fun taking Owen to the celebration even though he had no clue what was happening.  A baby adds a whole new dimension to every event.

Below are Daddy and Owen; we really got our money out of the gobble shirt!  On the right is Owen with his train.  Papaw has a couple of sets of LGB trains from Germany.  He set one up while we were at his house, but hopefully next year we will set them up at our house for Owen to play with.  Each car was almost as big as Owen!

120408  Thoughts for a Thursday
(Note: could not have posed this if I tried)

Now the rest of the story - I had put Owen in his sweet little suit to get pics since my Santa pic did not turn out as hoped.  Word of warning - do not dress your child in all white to see Santa.  Santa's cuffs and lapel are like 12" wide and the flash is like 12X too strong resulting in the marshmallow effect as shown below.  Lesson learned...  Ugh! I can hardly look at it.  If we hadn't already dropped this month's mortgage pmt on the prints, I probably would have gone back.  I am hoping we will run into Santa at Rock City or something and he will be generous enough to give it another try!

120208  The start of something big...  Today marks another new beginning for Mommy.  After working full time+ since the ripe old age of 17 and discussing countless "what if" scenarios with Kevin over the last few weeks, I returned to Chattem to give notice that I will be reporting to Owen as my full-time employer for awhile.  It was not an easy decision, and its brought out surprisingly positive and hurtful negative reactions in close friends and family.  Hopefully everything will work out great, and if not, so what?  You only live once.

In semi-related news, everyone in Chattem Sales was very gracious, and I am very grateful to them.  Here's a shout out to some of my Chattem friends - Linda, Megan, Sarah, and Rachel.

Progress Update - Owen is so close to rolling over (back to front)!  He is getting really frustrated with his lower arm that just won't seem to get out of the way.  Below is his new "side pose" that he is mastering and also his new grip that he's found.  I could not believe it tonight when he reached out and grabbed his rattle.  He held it for a solid 2 minutes on the 2nd try and kept hitting himself in the head with it.  I guess we need to invest in a softer rattle.

112408  Nana's Photo Shoot - Nana found this super-cute hat for Owen and wanted a few pics of him wearing it.  The pics turned out so cute I have to share.  Owen is really responding now with smiles and cooing and it is so much fun to capture it on film!  However, Mr. Owen's noggin is so large I had to basically rip the hat in half to make it appear as though it were sitting on his head.

111808
"He's just a big boy..."  Owen has hit the 2 month mark and had the dreaded 2-month check-up today.  Ok so he is 14 pounds 1 ounce -- 90th percentile for his age!  He really doesn't look morbidly obese, no major rolls to speak of, just very solid, but nonetheless I paranoidally (yes mom I know this isn't a word) asked our ped countless questions: am I feeding him too much, too often... exercise... diet... what could it be? Ultimately after debating these factors, the doc concludes, "I think he's just a big boy".  We got together with Baby Emma and Ada over the weekend and I swear they are all the same size although separated in age by up to 7 months (Ada, the oldest, is in 30th percentile for her age)!   So strange.  More pics from second month...

111408  My little twinkies - both at age 2 months...  Grandma found this pic of Kevin at 2 months to compare to Owen.

111008  We have been walking a lot lately at Coolidge and Baylor, trying to soak up the last warm days of the year.  Below are a couple of the pics I took last week.  The trees were beautiful, but I think Owen thought I was crazy rolling around in the leaves and mulch to get these shots.  I'll be glad when he can sit up and give me a little better angle for photos!

Anyone reading this already knows how much Kevin and I love Christmas and usually get ready for it in October!  Last weekend, we started getting out the decorations and introducing Owen to our favorite movies including Grinch and Christmas Vacation...
Owen's first look at the tree -

110308  Owen's first holiday - We had a big weekend of Halloween parties and get togethers, and Owen was amazing the entire weekend.  He was awake for most of the festivities with almost no fussing even though he missed a lot of valuable nap time!  He also started sleeping through the night a few days beforehand (7-8 hours!) which we figured he started in preparation for his big weekend.  Below are his costumes - a tiger and Michael Phelps.  To explain the Phelps costume (no I am totally not trying to push him toward any particular extracurriculars), I had wanted to do a topical costume since we only get to pick his costumes for maybe 2-3 years.  I was originally going to make him some lederhosen in honor of Chattanooga getting the VW plant this year, but when Owen arrived and had such ginormous feet, I knew he had to dress up as Michael Phelps!  Kevin and I were glued to the TV during the Olympics just a few weeks prior to Owen's birth watching the world records being smashed.  (Yes I did glue the goggles on upside down - oops!)

-- showing off Owen's big feet - seriously they are almost as big as Ada's!

Another milestone - Owen started taking bottles this week.  Kevin gives him the 8 o'clock feeding after he gets home from work every night now!  This was the first feeding.  Kevin was blocking Owen from seeing me and I stayed away, hiding out in the kitchen, since I was so worried about difficulties with bottle-feeding.  Luckily, he took right to it with no problem!

102308
Owen started rolling over yesterday!  Sometimes when he's upset, we lay him on his tummy and he feels better.  This time he kept fussing and apparently got himself worked up enough to kick himself over onto his back.  I thought it was kind of cheating because he was working from an incline, but this morning he did it again for Daddy, sans pillow.  Pictures above are from the "reenactment" last night for Daddy.

101508  One month and counting!!  No we cannot believe Owen is already a month old.  Our little stinker, as we refer to him, weighs 11 pounds, putting him in the 75th percentile for weight and 22 inches, 60th percentile for height.  A typical day includes eating at 7 am while Daddy gets ready for work, then lying down until the next feeding at 10.  After that Mommy eats breakfast and Owen has some tummy time.  Some days we go on walks through the neighborhood or meet friends for lunch.  When Daddy gets home, we eat dinner and hang out until night night at about 10.  Owen has been sleeping in his crib for a few weeks, fortunately going to sleep on his own without fuss, which allows Mommy and Daddy time to actually speak in whole sentences for a few minutes at night.  As every mother says, I already feel like he is growing up too fast!  A few pics from Owen's first month ( I still haven't organized all the pics everyone else has taken so I am missing a lot)

Looking back at the last 4 weeks it is amazing to know that we have gone from this ... to this... in just a month!  Owen is truly a blessing and the whole family is having a lot of fun getting to know him.

101308  This past weekend, Owen got to visit with all of his grandparents in one day.  We had just noticed in the past few days that Owen had started to smile occasionally, but while Grandpa and Grandma were visiting, Owen got tickled at something Grandpa was saying and he smiled his biggest smile yet!  Kevin even had time to go get the camera and capture several pictures of it.

100908  Several updates -- Owen surfing through Tummy Time this morning.  He seemed to like it pretty well.  I cannot wait to start seeing the progress he makes.  We can already tell a difference in the strength of his neck just in the last week or two.

Owen has been sleeping in his crib some.  Last night was a typical night so far in that he lies awake for a few minutes before finally drifting off.  It's funny that he looks in the direction of the camera - we feel like he is looking right at us.

When you're having a girl, you receive ballerina costumes, frilly dresses, tomboy blue jeans...  Boys receive "billboards" as I call them - onesies with a message - 'Don't rattle me,' 'I'm going to Grandmas,' and as shown below 'Sleep is for the Weak.'  Namaw bought Owen this onesie in anticipation of sleepless nights which luckily we have not had very many of.  Although I jokingly told people my child is not a billboard, they are pretty cute every once in awhile.

100808  Mr. Owen made his arrival at 4:23 pm on Monday, September 15th.  (His Grandma Barbara called his birthday very early on as it was the day of the full moon.)  Mommy and Daddy are having so much fun getting to know the little guy.  He is the sweetest, most handsome baby ever- not that we are jaded at all!  I am still not quite sure how I am going to try to include all of the fun times we are having but for the moment, here are a few pics...
